This project derived from a business need for ad sales to determine how much feed inventory would be available for a given campaign. I would need to decide whether to build a new tool to answer this question, or include the data in an existing tool.

User Needs

I started by interviewing ad sales and account management staff to determine how they were currently answering this question, what data they needed to answer this question and how they would look for the data (search/browse). I condensed my findings into a user scenario in the format of a comic.

Design Concepts

Deciding a new tool would be appropriate, I explored a number of interaction concepts for finding and displaying the data before establishing a model best suited to the behavior requirements of the scenario. To keep the tool focused I also used this process to weed out data that appeared interesting but didn't contribute directly to the users goal.

Prototype

Once I determined a suitable approach I used an iterative interaction design process to build a functional prototype. By placing the data and controls on one screen I was able to accommodate the users needs for searching, browsing and context switching in a simple and elegant interface. I tested the prototype with my users and refined it until everything was just right.
